‘What If…?’ Season 2 Will Tackle Phase 4 Of The MCU

Marvel Studios’ first animated series What If…? is off to a strong start on Disney+. The first two episodes of the series have been very well received, and audiences seem excited to see what questions each new episode might ask. But one of the major questions that plagues viewer’s minds has evolved from “what if” and has grown to “what’s next“? Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige already has the answer, and it is sure to be one that keeps bringing people back for more!

Based on the long running comic book series it shares a title with, What If… gives us hypothetical alternative takes on classic Marvel stories; with the series specifically tackling stories seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The title “What If” is posed as a thematic question that lends itself to each episode’s story, with the first episode of the series asking “what if Peggy Carter had become a super soldier instead of Steve Rogers?”, and the second episode telling the story of “what if T’Challa had become Starlord instead of Peter Quill?“, and playing out how these changes would affect the larger storyline of the MCU.

In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Kevin Feige confirmed that What If…?’s second season will include stories from movies that are part of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Specifically, Feige was asked how Phase 4 and the introduction of the larger Marvel Multiverse would affect the future of What If…?, with Feige saying:

That’s the fun thing about having the What If…? series now; we can explore questions just like that. And I will say, just as season 1 is tapping into films and storylines from the MCU that you’ve seen up to this point, season 2 will definitely incorporate movies from Phase 4.

As Marvel Studios’ first animated venture, What If…? had big shoes to fill as a new chapter that will be considered cannon to its live-action counterparts. While a few of Marvel’s heavy hitters like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Dave Bautista, and Scarlett Johansson are sitting this one out, the majority of the live-action MCU cast are present and accounted for in this series where they reprise their respective roles. Stars featured on the series include Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Karen Gillan, Josh Brolin, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Rudd, Samuel L. Jackson, Benedict Wong, Michael B. Jordan, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Rooker, Kurt Russell, Jeff Goldblum, Natalie Portman, Paul Bettany, Sebastian Stan, Kat Dennings, Jon Favreau, Emily VanCamp, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Michael Douglas, Leslie Bibb, Ophelia Lovibond, Danai Gurira, and Neal McDonough.

It should be interesting to see what What If…? Season 2 eventually does with some of the MCU Phase 4 material. Currently, the only film released from Phase 4 is Black Widow, alongside the three live-action Disney+ series, WandaVision, The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, and Loki. We have Phase 4 movies like Shang-Chi, The Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania all coming in the next year or so, never mind more Disney+ series like Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk that are on the way. What If…? Season 2 looks like it will have plenty of new material to draw inspiration from!
