Weekend Box Office (03/15-03/17): ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ Chops Its Way To The Top Again

Kung Fu Panda 4 had an excellent hold in its second weekend, dropping just 48% to haul in $30 million, bringing its domestic total to $107.7M. Meanwhile, appealing to a completely different audience, Dune Part Two is still hanging in at #2 in its third week. That sci-fi epic came in JUST behind Kung Fu Panda 4 earning $29.1M. Its domestic take now sits at $205.3M.

Unfortunately, despite the great performance of these two pictures, it was a soft weekend.  Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune Part Two were pretty much all anyone wanted to go to the cinema to see.

Lionsgate

The one new release to chart in the Top Five was Arthur the King, starring Mark Wahlberg. The film is based on a true story about a dog that trails after an adventure racing team.

Viewers loved this picture, bestowing it with an A CinemaScore, 4½ stars via PostTrak, and a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics seem more split with its RT Tomatometer score sitting at 64%.

Despite the overwhelmingly positive reactions to Arthur the King, the movie just failed to deliver. It only clocked $7.5M at the box office. It’s possible that word of mouth may encourage others to check it out, but it also appears that this sort of mid-tier drama is just perceived as something people are willing to just wait and stream.

You can check out the Top Five below:

Most likely, next weekend will belong to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Not only does it bring back the fresh cast of 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, but it also reunites the remaining cast members of the original two films. True, they appeared in Afterlife, but based on the trailers, it looks as though they will play a larger part in this sequel.

Will you be checking out Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire this weekend?  Or will you see Dune Part Two again?
