Russell Crowe Reveals His ‘Thor: Love And Thunder’ Role

Last month when it was announced that Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe was joining Marvel’s upcoming Thor sequel, Thor: Love And Thunder, speculation immediately began running wild as to who the Hollywood icon would be playing. Thankfully, we didn’t have to wait long at all to find out just what role he is taking on as Crowe himself has already broken his silence and announced it himself!

Russell Crowe will be taking on the role of none other than the king of the gods, Zeus! Yes really. Zeus. Like from Greek mythology, appearing in a film based heavily on Norse mythology. In the Marvel comics universe, Zeus is a member of the Olympians, which are a group of beings from a “pocket dimension” called Olympus. Fittingly, the Olympians were worshipped by the people of ancient Greece; making these seemingly immortal interdimensional beings the actual ancient Greek Gods.

Crowe made the reveal rather candidly while describing his plans for the day during a recent radio interview with Australian radio station Joy 94.4 (via ComingSoon). Crowe said:

I’m going to get on my bicycle and I’m going to ride up to Disney Fox Studios. Around 9:15, I shall be Zeus. It’s for Thor. It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about and I’m going to enjoy it.

Whether Crowe was supposed to say anything regarding his role yet is another question entirely. Marvel is notorious for keeping things very hush-hush in regards to information leaks on upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, so either Crowe didn’t know or didn’t care as he was already wrapping up his final day of filming that morning.

It is currently unclear just how big Crowe’s role will be in the film, although with Christian Bale joining the project as the villainous Gorr The God Butcher, it is entirely possible he won’t be in the film for very long.

Story details are not yet available for the film, which is set to see the return of series star Chris Hemsworth in the titular role as Thor. Hemsworth will be joined by several returning Thor cast members and MCU veterans from other Marvel projects including Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Jeff Goldblum.

Thor: Love And Thunder will also see the return of Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, who was last seen in 2014’s Thor: The Dark World (No, Avengers: Endgame doesn’t count. That was a time travel sequence and was made entirely from cut footage leftover from Thor: The Dark World, so our statement stands). She will be taking up the mantle of Thor herself this time around! We aren’t entirely sure how this exactly will affect things with Thor Odinson that we already know, but it should certainly be interesting, to say the least!

Fan-favorite director Taika Waititi, who reinvented Thor in the MCU in the character’s previous solo film Thor: Ragnarok, is once again stepping behind the camera to direct the Thor: Love And Thunder.
