Hot on the heels of the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Captain America 4 is in development at Marvel Studios. This according to a story in The Hollywood Reporter.

(Spoilers. If you haven’t watched, go watch the latest episode of the Disney+ series. Then come back and continue reading.)

In the final episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) officially claimed the Captain America role. So naturally, a feature film starring Mackie seems the next logical step for the character. Showrunner Malcom Spellman and staff writer Dalan Musson have been tapped to write the script. The project is in the early stages. No director is attached yet. Although Mackie’s involvement is a forgone conclusion, no other cast has been mentioned.

Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (aka the Winter Soldier) would seem a logical choice, but nothing is guaranteed. Now that he has finished his mission to make amends, his story could go in a new direction. It’s possible his story will follow Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Julia Louise Dreyfus’ mysterious Valerie. Where that story goes is anyone’s guess.

One thing is for certain: It doesn’t look like Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers will be back in any of those stories. Rumors about the return of the first Avenger pop up off.  As quick as they come up, they get squashed.  Marvel head honcho Kevin Fiege just shot it down recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The idea of what Captain America embodies and what that title represents was central to the story of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Both as a part of the story and as a part of our real world story. Spellman and his team created a show that sparked conversations about race and the Black experience, especially the relationship among African-Americans and the government and law enforcement.

Anthony Mackie beautifully portrayed Sam’s struggle of stepping into the red, white and blue suit; Reconciling wanting to honor the man and hero Roger was with what America means to a Black man. He found the balance by remembering that Steve didn’t just represent America, he held those in power accountable to deliver the potential of America for everyone.

We’ll keep you updated on any Captain America 4 news when they come. In the meantime, let us know your thoughts about Marvel’s new Captain America!
