San Diego Comic Con broke tons of great news for the future of Marvel projects. In addition to the exciting info about the upcoming phases of the MCU, an animation panel spoke about some of the lesser impactful, but still just as exciting, cartoons we can expect. One of those announcements was one fans have been slavering for — X-Men ‘97.
Who Will Be Returning For X-Men ’97
Continuing the exploits of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series that aired in the ‘90s, X-Men ‘97 is primed to bring back some of the show’s classic mutants. Part of the announcement at SDCC was a revelation of the team, which you can watch the video in this tweet from @XMen97News.

The entirety of the original team is set to appear. Cyclops, Storm, Gambit, and Wolverine are the biggest of the fan favorites. I, myself, am very excited that Jubilee hasn’t been left off the roster. As one of my favorite mutants, Jubilee often gets the shaft in the comics. She’s the lynchpin of the animated series and it wouldn’t be the same without her.
The news didn’t just include the heroes. Other characters were shown to be a part of the series. Cable, Nightcrawler, and Sunspot were announced to be joining the team, among others. Mr. Sinister and Emma Frost will appear as a couple of the show’s antagonists.
A New Leader For The X-Men
One bigger piece of news is that Magneto will be leading the X-Men. Having been given a redesigned look reminiscent of his comic appearance circa Uncanny X-Men #200, Magneto will replace Professor X as the X-Men’s mentor. What happened to the Professor has yet to be revealed. It will likely be the driving force of the new series.
X-Men ‘97 will be overseen by Brad DeMayo, serving as head writer and executive producer, as well as Jake Castorena and Charley Feldman, who will act as supervising director and supervising producer respectively. Fans of the original series will be happy to know that the show’s original director, Larry Houston, and showrunners, Eric and Julia Lewald, will be consulting on the new series.
The series will premiere on Disney+ in the fall of 2023. It will mark the first X-Men project from Marvel Studios under the banner of Disney.
