Marvel’s The Eternals is just a few months shy of its November release, yet audiences know next to nothing about one of the next chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The project is set to introduce fans to a whole new corner of the MCU unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, and with the latest trailer for the film, we finally get some more insight as to what we can expect.
The Eternals is going to be Marvel Studios’ next big release following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (which releases in September), making it the third feature-length film in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Eternals are part of a larger group of powerful beings in the MCU dubbed Celestials, and this particular group has been living on Earth in secret for centuries to protect the planet from a particular brand of evil beings called Deviants. As you can see, The Eternals looks to have quite a lot going on! The new trailer, thankfully, addresses that the film is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, going far enough to explain that The Eternals did not interject themselves into the battle with Thanos because they were specifically instructed not to get involved in any human conflict unless the Deviants were directly involved. It is also implied that while The Eternals have been around on Earth for thousands of years, that they are just now reuniting for the first time in a very long time.
We are also given our first hints of where this story will take us, with warnings of “the emergence”; a cataclysmic event that was triggered by the snap in Avengers: Endgame that brought back the missing half of the universe’s population. While the trailer doesn’t tell us exactly what “the emergence” will actually do, one of our heroes drops a line about the “end of the world”, so we are guessing that it’s probably pretty bad.
While it is possible that future trailers may give us more to work with, much of the plot of The Eternals remains vague. Then again, this is a Marvel Studios project! The studio is well known for keeping their secrets under lock and key until their projects are released, so this may end up being all we have to work with until then.
The Eternals is directed by Oscar-winner Chloé Zhao and features a massive ensemble cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Richard Madden, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Lauren Ridloff, Don Lee, and Lia McHugh. The film is currently set to release exclusively in theaters on November 5, 2021.
