The Galaxy’s Best Bad Ass finally gets to take center stage. Spinning out of the events of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett dropped its first trailer today ahead of its arrival on Disney+ later this year.

Since first debuting in animated form on the otherwise unmentionable Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978, Boba Fett has always been a fan favorite. He went on to appear in The Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. There he came off as the stoic, silent type of bad-ass, only speaking when absolutely necessary. In the original 1980 edit of Empire, Fett only has 6 and a half minutes of screen time and only speaks 5 lines. In Return of the Jedi, he doesn’t even speak at all. From the trailer released by Disney, it looks like Fett will continue to let his actions do the talking.

The new series will explore the Star Wars universe’s underworld. This shadowy corner has always been an important part of Star Wars but has not been explored on-screen. In this new series, Fett (once again played by prequel actor Temuera Morrison) returns to Tatooine along with Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) and takes the throne of Crime Lord Jabba the Hutt. The question will be, can he keep it?

This series is set in the same time period as The Mandalorian, roughly 5 years after the battle of Endor. That means the galaxy has a power vacuum. The fall of the Empire and the death of Jabba means quite a power struggle in the galaxy’s underworld. While The Mandalorian plays as a western set in space, The Book of Boba Fett could be The Godfather, albeit a long time ago in a galaxy far away.

Last year, when Disney began announcing new Star Wars projects during their investor day, they left The Book of Boba Fett off the list. Shows like Ashoka, Andor, The Bad Batch, and Star Wars Visions were all part of the presentation, along with countless other projects from Marvel and other parts of the Disney portfolio. The Book of Boba Fett was announced a week later, as part of a post-credit scene at the end of Season 2 of The Mandalorian.

The Book of Boba Fett drops on December 29th on Disney+.
