The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 8 ‘The Rescue’

After last week’s avalanche of announcements for new television and film projects set in the Star Wars universe, Disney and Lucasfilm had one more surprise for fans waiting in the shadows with the season finale of The Mandalorian Season 2. After the credits roll on the episode titled ‘The Rescue‘, we are given a stinger featuring none other than the legendary Boba Fett, followed by the announcement that a new project called The Book Of Boba Fett will be coming to Disney+ in December 2021!

Boba Fett has long been a fan-favorite character within the Star Wars universe. The galaxy’s most dangerous bounty hunter first appeared in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, played by the late Jeremy Bulloch. The character was seemingly killed off in Star Wars Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi, but recently reappeared in Season 2 of the first-ever Star Wars live-action television series, The Mandalorian, on Disney+ with Temuera Morrison taking on the role.

Morrison had previously played Jango Fett in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, who was Boba’s “father” of sorts (Boba is technically a clone, it’s a long story; watch the movies). Since his return, Boba Fett has quickly jumped to the forefront of Star Wars fans’ minds once again as we waited to find out what Disney and Lucasfilm might have planned for the character.

While it is currently unclear just what type of project The Book Of Boba Fett will actually be, fans have already begun speculating. Many suspect this to be a third spinoff series of The Mandalorian, joining Ahsoka and Rangers Of The New Republic. Alternatively, it could be a limited event series similar to what Lucasfilm is doing for Lando. It may even a movie, which would give them the chance to tell an independent Boba Fett focused story without interrupting the story of Din Djarin (The Mandalorian, played by Pedro Pascal) and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda).

A Boba Fett focused project has been rumored for some time now, and filming prior to Season 3 of The Mandalorian could be a way to bridge the gap between seasons. There is also the chance that this could just be the next storyline for The Mandalorian series itself, considering Season 2 wrapped up the show’s current storyline and brought a mild sense of closure to the saga of Din Djarin and Grogu while leaving the door open for more stories yet to come.

The Book of Boba Fett is slated to release in December, 2021, while The Mandalorian Season 3 is set to drop on Christmas 2021. So, they could very well be the exact same project. However, it seems more likely that this new Boba Fett project will be its own thing ahead of a new season of The Mandalorian.

In the post-credits scene for The Mandalorian, Season 2, Episode 8, ‘The Rescue‘, we see Boba Fett (Temeura Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) heading back to the desert planet of Tatooine. More specifically, we see Boba Fett return to Jabba The Hutt’s palace for the first time since Return Of The Jedi. It has been quite some time since Jabba’s death, and his former majordomo Bib Fortuna (Matt Wood) seems to be running the show now. Or at least he was until Boba Fett showed up and quite literally cleaned the place out before taking his place on the throne.

It isn’t clear yet if Fett is now in charge of crime on Tatooine or if he had just decided to tie up some loose ends now that he had his armor back. However, we are fairly sure that The Book Of Boba Fett will answer most of our questions. Maybe we will even find out just how he managed to escape the Sarlacc?

Both Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett and Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand are expected to star in this project.

The Book of Boba Fett is set to arrive in December 2021 exclusively on the Disney+ streaming platform.
