Lucasfilm Pulls ‘Rangers Of The New Republic’ From Active Development

‘The Mandalorian’ spin-off has been put on indefinite hold.

It looks like one of the anticipated Star Wars series scheduled for Disney+ won’t find its way to the streamer. At least not for the time being. Star Wars: Rangers of the New Republic has been pulled from “active development’.

Announced last year as part of Disney’s big Investors Day Zoom meeting, Rangers of the New Republic was going to center on the pilots and marshals patrolling the edges of the galaxy, protecting the folks of the galaxy from crime and lawlessness left behind after the fall of the Empire. Set in the same period of the hit series The Mandalorian, Rangers of the New Republic was a series executive producers Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau were developing. While details of the show were scant, it was thought the series would center on characters like Cara Dune (Gina Carano), Greef Karga (Carl Weathers), and Captain Carson Teva (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee)

Lucasfilm gave no reason for the change in plans. Fans are speculating that the dismissal of Carano from her contract and the decision to not recast the role have led to putting the series on hold. Disney let the actress go after controversial posts on her personal social media accounts.

It would seem the plans for the series must have centered around the former Rebellion shock trooper and Alderaanian survivor. So much so that the series plans could not be reworked for another character. How this will affect the speculated event crossover between Rangers and the fellow New Republic era series The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka remains to be seen.

Don’t confuse ‘pulled from active development’ with ‘being canceled.’ Lucasfilm could revive the project if and when they feel the time is right. Now, don’t worry. Disney has plenty of Star Wars on the way. The animated Bad Batch already began streaming. The Book of Boba Fett finds itself in front of the cameras already. Fans expect it by Christmas. Of course, a third season of The Mandalorian (sans Carano) is on the way. Other series include Obi-Wan, Andor, Ahsoka, and The AcolyteAll are at different points in the production process but should be on the streaming platform by 2022.
