Diego Luna returns to the Star Wars universe as Cassian Andor, an operative of the Rebellion in a new series set before Rogue One. A teaser sizzle reel for the series, Andor, screened as part of Lucasfilm’s portion of the Disney Investor Livestream.
Set five years before the events of the original Star Wars (and Rogue One), the series will follow Cassian’s early days with the Rebellion. It will reveal how he helped build the Rebellion, and how the Rebellion made him into what he needed to be.
“Everything I did, I did for the Rebellion.”
Cassian is a battle hardened soldier in Rogue One. He’s a warrior, not a hero. He has done things. Things that had to be done. But not the things that heroes do.
The sizzle reel (above) shows the level of quality going into the production. With over 200 characters, thousands of background actors, alien worlds with huge action set pieces, it will feel like 12 feature films rolled into one. “It’s very cinematic, for me that’s where the excitement is,” shares Production Designer Luke Hill.
THE FUTURE OF STAR WARS
Andor will be just one of the many new series and films coming from the House of Mouse. Investors were updated on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. New shows in development include Lando, Ahsoka, Rangers of the New Republic, and The Acolyte. Three animated series, The Bad Batch, a follow up to The Clone Wars, A Droid Story, centered on the untold tale of C-3PO & R2-D2, and Star Wars: Visions, an anime anthology series coming in 2021, were also announced.
On the theatrical front, Wonder Woman auteur Patty Jenkins will be directing the next Star Wars feature film, Rogue Squadron. It will tell the story of “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy.”
Filming now in the UK, the 12-episode Andor series will stream on Disney+ in 2022.
