Lucasfilm has officially parted ways with actress Gina Carano, effectively telling the actress “This is the way… to the door”.

The actress has portrayed the character Cara Dune on the first-ever live-action Star Wars television series, The Mandalorian, on Disney+ for the first two seasons of the show. As of today, she is officially no longer involved with the show or Lucasfilm in any capacity.

A statement from a Lucasfilm spokesperson released today clarified the following information:

Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.

This news dropped within 24 hours of the #FireGinaCarano hashtag began trending on Twitter for what seems like the 10th time in as many months following the actress’ multiple controversial social media posts. The night before the hashtag began trending again, Carano had shared an anti-Semitic story on her public Instagram account that likened modern political differences and the treatment of conservatives today to the treatment of Jews in Nazi Germany.

The post was quickly deleted, but by the time it was taken down the damage had already been done. Countless fans were able to screenshot and download the post to reshare it on their own social media where the offensive nature of the content went viral.

She had also posted a photo of a person wearing multiple cloth masks saying “Meanwhile in California…“, seemingly mocking the mask wearer for taking precautions against the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. This post was also removed by mid-day on Wednesday.

Star Wars fans have already grown accustomed to the controversy surrounding Carano and her use of social media. There have been numerous complaints regarding the actress’s online interactions including multiple posts that were deemed transphobic, among other issues.

It is not yet clear how Carano’s absence in the future of The Mandalorian will be addressed in the series, if at all. Her character, Cara Dune, was one of the main recurring roles in the series, and based on the story told up until the end of the second season of the show, there was no implication that her involvement would be coming to an end.

While it was never formally confirmed by Lucasfilm, it was also assumed that the upcoming Disney+ series Star Wars: Rangers Of The New Republic was to be a spinoff series that focused on the Cara Dune character. If that was the case, the show will likely be scrapped or forced to rework from the ground up, as Carano is no longer involved with the Star Wars brand.
