‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ Teaser Confirms Captain Carter’s Return

Captain Carter in What If...?
Disney

Okay, first of all, this isn’t a SPOILER because it’s in the trailer! The movie isn’t out yet and Marvel Studios/Disney has put this out into the universe. Plus, this has been teased previously in the poster.

But the new teaser confirms that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness brings back Captain Carter, as depicted in the animated series What If…?. Her face isn’t shown, but her shield is prominently displayed as the character looks to be charging against Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Captain Carter is based on Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, who wound up being the wife of Steve Rogers thanks to the time travel shenanigans of Avengers: Endgame.

Atwell debuted in Captain America: The First Avenger and went on to appear in numerous Marvel movies and even headlined her own show for two seasons on CBS, Agent Carter.  It’s no secret that Marvel Studios (more specifically president Kevin Feige) doesn’t acknowledge Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or the majority of other TV projects created by Marvel Productions. But Agent Carter always seemed linked more closely to the movies, and Atwell’s continued presence in the films would seem to imply that this series was given a pass. (Plus, the fact that Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk’s recent introduction into the MCU hints that Feige is warming to the idea of synergy between the past shows and the current MCU.)

At any rate, I assume Atwell plays Captain Carter. If not… they shouldn’t have even bothered bringing her back. (Atwell did reprise her role for What If…?.)

The trailer also featured the fiery glowing figure that was already seen fighting the Scarlet Witch in previous trailers, but we still don’t know who that is. It could be Captain Marvel. It could be Photon. It could be a version of Pepper Potts, even. We’ll see.

The other big “reveal” (more of a confirmation, really) is the presence of The Illuminati in the MCU (shouldn’t it now be the MCM, the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse?). People with hearing better than mine already called that the voice-over in the last trailer was provided by Patrick Stewart, reprising the role of Charles Xavier from Fox’s X-Men movies.

This teaser is just 16 seconds long but packs in quite a lot!  Check it out!

In Marvel Studios’ ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Sam Raimi directed. The cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer.  From the first movie, Topo Wresniwiro and Mark Anthony Brighton will return as Hamir and Daniel Drumm. (If you read the comics, you know Daniel Drumm could have a much larger role in the future.) From WandaVision, Julian Hilliard and Jett Klyne are expected to return as Billy and Tommy. The characters Clea and the Living Tribunal are rumored to appear as well. Plus, since this is a Sam Raimi project, look for a cameo by his good buddy Bruce Campbell.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens on May 6.
