Spider-Man: No Way Home just did a whammy on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But things aren’t about to calm down as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looks to twist things all around again! While Peter Parker (Tom Holland) teamed up with benevolent alternate universe versions of himself (Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield), Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) looks to be facing off against evil versions of himself (also played by Cumberbatch).
Luckily, he’ll have the help of the Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong) and Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) who had her own reality-tampering escapade in WandaVision. Not to mention the fact that this sequel introduces another fan-favorite Marvel character, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) who can kick portals between dimensions. Sounds like a useful power to have in this storyline.
Ahead of Multiverse of Madness‘ May 6 opening, Marvel Studios/Disney have released a behind-the-scenes featurette which includes director Sam Raimi and most of the cast discussing the new film. Cumberbatch calls this picture “the most fantastic new phase of Marvel.” He also promised that Multiverse of Madness has a “darker tone to it.” Wong states that this is “unknown territory” and says that audiences will be “startled.”
Raini promised that this picture gives “the fans what they wanted, just not exactly what they expected.”

Dr. Stephen Strange casts a forbidden spell that opens the doorway to the multiverse, including alternate versions of himself, whose threat to humanity is too great for the combined forces of Strange, Wong, and Wanda Maximoff.
Well… guess it’s a good thing they have America Chavez on backup.
Returning from the first Doctor Strange are Rachel McAdams as Doctor Christine Palmer and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo. Michael Stuhlbarg joins as Doctor Nicodemus West. Expect a cameo from Raimi’s regular collaborator Bruce Campbell.
It’s unconfirmed but it sure sounded like Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier in the previously released trailer. Fans speculate that he will be part of the Illuminati or at least a film version of that brain trust.
It’s also rumored that WandaVision‘s Julian Hilliard will return as Billy Maximoff along with Jett Klyne as Tommy Maximoff.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness materializes in theaters on May 6, 2022.
