Rumors emerged in January of this year that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness might introduce the dimension-kicking hero America Chavez.  Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has now confirmed the character’s appearance, during the Disney Investor Day presentation, and has even gone so far as to announce that she will be played by Xochitl (pronounced “Sho-Chit”) Gomez (Netflix’s Babysitter’s Club).

Sam Raimi is directing the Doctor Strange sequel with a script by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron.  Benedict Cumberbatch reprises the lead role.  Also returning from the first movie are Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Doctor Christine Palmer, and Benedict Wong as Wong.  Also joining the adventure is Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, and reportedly, Multiverse of Madness will build upon the events set up by the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision.  It has also been hinted that the villain of the film will be Nightmare.

America Chavez (occasionally known as Miss America) is Marvel’s first Latinx LGBTQ character.  She is an alien who came to Earth courtesy of her ability to kick open star-shaped portals between dimensions.  She also has super strength and can fly.  She is a member of the Young Avengers and was featured as part of the Marvel Rising initiative, which included cartoons and Hasbro toys.  Cierra Ramirez voiced her in the animated projects.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is steadily introducing more and more of its younger generation of characters, including the Young Avengers.  Emma Fuhrmann portrayed Cassie Lang in Avengers: Endgame.  In the comics, she becomes the YA Stature.  Hailee Steinfeld is playing the new Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, on the new Hawkeye Disney+ series.  Iman Vellani stars in another upcoming Disney+ show, Ms. Marvel.  The trailers for WandaVision have teased the introductions of Wiccan and Speed.  And in another announcement at the Disney Investor Day presentation, it was stated that Ironheart is also getting a Disney+ show.  (Poor Squirrel Girl missed her opportunity when her show New Warriors was not picked up by Freeform… or any other outlet.)

Many fans feel like it is just a matter of time before the Young Avengers gather on a screen, either big or small.

Are you a fan of America Chavez? Are you excited to see her kicking her way onto the big screen and into the Multiverse of Madness?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to arrive in theaters on March 25, 2022.
