Bruce Campbell Hints At A Cameo In ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’

There are fewer actors who fans of geekdom gravitate to more than Bruce Campbell. He is loved among horror movie fans for his role in the Evil Dead series, is adored by fantasy nerds for playing Autolycus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, and even broke through into mainstream fandom by playing Sam Axe on USA’s Burn Notice. So, it’s easy to see how a seemingly innocuous tweet he sent over the weekend could have so many people worked into a frenzy.

The tweet, which included a picture of the London skyline at dusk said: “Boy, it was a blast, working in a certain city, with a certain director on a certain movie with a certain actor – it sure was!” Though cryptic, Campbell’s fans are taking it as a not-so-subtle hint that he will be making an appearance in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Let’s look at the clues as to why this is likely:

  1. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is being directed by Sam Raimi.
  2. The movie is currently filming in London.
  3. Bruce Campbell is in London.
  4. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are longtime collaborators, and Raimi often includes Campbell in small cameos in many of his films.

That’s really all there is to it. While Campbell’s tweet isn’t confirmation that he has an appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it is a pretty solid hint. After all, the actor and the director have been inextricably linked for decades. The most famous collaboration between Campbell and Raimi is the Evil Dead series, in which Campbell played the lead role in all three films, but their relationship dates back prior to that with Campbell appearing in a few of Raimi’s earliest short films.

Raimi also cast Campbell in each of the Spider-Man movies he directed. In the first Spider-Man, Campbell played a wrestling announcer, whose introduction of Peter Parker just before his fight against Bone Saw coined the name “Spider-Man.” In the second film, Campbell played an uppity theater usher who wouldn’t let Peter into the auditorium after the curtain call. And in the last Raimi-led Spider-Man movie, Campbell played a maître-d in a French restaurant. Each of these were fun tongue-in-cheek appearances and didn’t really affect the overall plot of the movie, so it’s easy to assume that Campbell will have another of these types of cameos and not appear as a major character. But who knows? Maybe Campbell will show up as a Spider-Man from another dimension, calling himself “The Amazing Spider-Chin.”

I wouldn’t put it past him.
