We may only be less than a week out from the premiere of Marvel’s What If…? on Disney+, but that won’t stop the buzz surrounding the show. For example, Marvel just released a clip from the show revealing the first time Captain Carter met the Hydra Stomper.
I know what you’re thinking. “Captain Carter? Hydra Stomper?! These aren’t Marvel characters!” And you’re right…but also wrong. The premise behind What If…? is to take a look at different worlds within the Marvel Multiverse and see just how things could have gone. For example, what if Peggy Carter took the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers? Were that to happen, the MCU would be hailing Captain Carter instead of Captain America. It…can get a little confusing, but the clip posted above should clarify things a bit.
In it, we see Captain Carter (with Hayley Atwell reprising her role) alongside Bucky Barnes and Dum Dum Dugan. They are taking heavy fire and call in reinforcements, only to be shocked to find a giant suit of armor being flown by Steve Rogers himself. In this universe, Steve Rogers was injured and unable to take the Super Soldier Serum, but he made the perfect test pilot for Howard Stark’s newest invention, the Hydra Stomper. Clearly, the Hydra Stomper shows some similarities to Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit, but his father pioneered the tech 70 years before Tony could.
What If…? is the latest in the Marvel offerings airing exclusively on Disney+. Set to premiere on August 11th, the show is fully animated, but many of the original cast from the MCU films will be returning, such as Atwell, Chris Hemsworth, and Chadwick Boseman in his final performance before his tragic passing last August. Despite being animated, the show will take place within the MCU’s continuity. After all, it’s no surprise that it premiered after the multiversal shenanigans of Loki.
