Critics Choice Super Awards Honor ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ And ‘The Boys’ (Full Winners List)

It feels a little anticlimactic in the wake of the Oscars, but the Critics Choice Super Awards winners have been announced.  The Critics Choice Awards is a prestigious honor and is one of the better predictors of the Oscars, but the Super Awards are kind of just a lark they issue to appeal to casual fans of Superhero, Action, Horror, and Science Fiction films and TV shows.

This isn’t actually an awards ceremony.  The body just announces its winners… honestly, I don’t even know if there’s even a trophy or plaque or hell, a tiara, that the winners get.  This being a more casual prize, they don’t even split the acting categories between Lead and Supporting and the TV nominations are lumped together for Series, Limited Series, or Made-For-TV Movie.

This also seemed like the “Jump On The Bandwagon Awards” as most of the honors went to either the projects that have been sweeping other more serious awards or are just hot right now.

So you probably guessed it; Everything Everywhere All At Once was the most-awarded movie with three wins for Best Sci-Fi Movie, Best Sci-Fi Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Sci-Fi Actor for Ke Huy Quan.  Of course, this film just swept the Academy Awards and won Best Picture, with Yeoh being named Best Actress and Quan landing Best Supporting Actor.

Yeoh triumphed over her co-star Stephanie Hsu who was also up for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.  Interestingly, at the Oscars, Hsu was up against their fellow co-star Jamie Lee Curtis who won.  Curtis wasn’t even nominated for the CCSAs!

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick
Paramount

Last year’s biggest hit (or second-biggest, depending on how you look at it), Top Gun: Maverick only took home one Oscar for Sound Editing, but it got more love here for Best Action Movie, with Tom Cruise scoring Best Action Actor.

Two other films won two CCSAs — The Batman which nabbed Best Superhero Movie and Best Superhero Actor for Colin Farrell, and Pearl for which Mia Goth took home Best Horror Actress and Best Villain (any genre).

Going into this announcement, The Batman actually had the most nominations of any movie, with six overall, including three Best Actor nods for Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Paul Dano.

Viola Davis in The Woman King
TriStar/eOne

Best Action Actress went to Viola Davis for The Woman King.  This film didn’t receive ANY Oscar nominations, with many crying “Snub!” so this is a nice redemption.

Speaking of redemptions, Angela Bassett who was considered by many as a lock for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, before she lost to Curtis, managed to score Best Superhero Actress at the CCSAs.  Once again this isn’t a major accolade, but… it’s something.

In the Horror field, Barbarian took Best Movie, and Ralph Fiennes won Best Actor for The Menu.

Antony Starr as Homelander in The Boys drinking milk
Amazon Prime Video

On the TV side of things, The Boys also won three awards for Best Superhero Series, and with Antony Starr taking both Best Superhero Actor, and Best Villain (any genre).  Tatiana Maslani nabbed Best Superhero Actress.

Jenna Ortega in Wednesday
Netflix

Wednesday scored two wins for Best Horror Series and Best Horror Actress for Jenna Ortega.  Severance also nabbed two wins for Best Sci-Fi Actor for Adam Scott and Best Sci-Fi Actress for Patricia Arquette.  Although they aren’t technically the same show, they exist in the same universe, so Kevin Costner won Best Action Actor for Yellowstone while Helen Mirren won Best Action Actress for the prequel 1923.

Evan Peters scored Best Horror Actor for Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (not sure I agree with this being classified as a Horror Series, but oh well…), and Cobra Kai landed Best Action Series.  Best Sci-Fi Series was a tie between Stranger Things and Andor.
