It’s not unheard of, but it’s rare that one movie sweeps the Academy Awards but The Daniels’ Everything Everywhere All At Once managed to do just that. It took home seven awards including Best Picture. It’s also unusual that a picture that is released so early in the year (almost one year ago) manages to stay in the zeitgeist to this degree.
The Daniels, Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, scored Best Directing and Original Screenplay. Michelle Yeoh continued her winning streak and became the first Asian to win Best Actress, besting Cate Blanchett, who had been polling neck and neck with Yeoh throughout awards season for her role in Tár.
Also continuing a winning streak was her co-star Ke Huy Quan, who landed Best Supporting Actor and rounded out his comeback streak after disappearing from the entertainment industry for many years following his heyday as a child in the 1980s. Hollywood loves a comeback.
Perhaps one of the biggest upsets of the night was Jamie Lee Curtis’ score for Best Supporting Actress over Angela Bassett who was up for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and who many considered a lock. But Curtis’ performance has been praised and she won at the SAG Awards which helped paved the way for her Oscars victory. (At least Bassett has all of those memes now.)
Also winning was Paul Rogers for Editing, who declared that this was only the second film he’s ever edited.
The only top-line category that Everything Everywhere All At Once didn’t win was Best Actor and that’s just because there wasn’t a lead actor in it. That honor went to another comeback king, Brendan Fraser who won for The Whale. Once again, Hollywood loves a comeback.
The film also won for makeup and hairstyling for Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Anne Marie Bradley.
All four acting winners — Yeoh, Fraser, Quan, and Curtis — are first-time nominees and winners, as were the Daniels.
It should be noted that both Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale were from the smaller studio A24, perhaps shooting that studio into the big leagues, despite their quirkier output.
Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front took home four trophies for International Picture (Germany), Music (Original Score), Production Design, and Cinematography.
Another international film, RRR won for the song “Naatu Naatu,” besting pop superstars Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
Two of last year’s biggest hits only took home one prize a piece. Avatar: The Way of Water was the no-brainer to land Visual Effects and Top Gun: Maverick scooped up Sound Editing. Another no-brainer was the win for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio for Animated Feature.
While Bassett didn’t win for Supporting Actress, there was one triumph for Wakanda Forever for Ruth Carter’s Costume Design, making her the first Black woman to win two Oscars ever, after her score for the first Black Panther in 2019.
Interestingly, Everything Everywhere All At Once‘s sweep meant that several other perceived frontrunners — The Fabelmans, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, and Tár went home emptyhanded.
