“The Rock” Of Eternity: DC FanDome Unveils The First Footage Of ‘Black Adam’

It seems like it’s been over a decade since fans first started buzzing that Dwayne Johnson should play the DC supervillain/anti-hero Black Adam. The wrestler-turned-actor agreed and started lobbying for the role. Well, as we know, Warner Brothers has had some struggles with getting its DC Comics-based films up and running on a level of, um, certain other successful franchises.

But following the success of Shazam! in 2019, fans are finally getting Johnson as a full-blown super-being. The first bit of footage (it’s not quite a trailer) was released as part of Warner Bros.’ massive second annual DC FanDome virtual event. It appears that Sarah Shahi‘s character, Adrianna Tomaz, a professor, uncovers a long-lost tomb and unleashes an ancient force.

As Johnson stated during DC FanDome:

“This character, this film, this universe has been a gigantic project of mine for a very long time.  It’s the kind of project that I know comes along once in a lifetime. And the truth is, I was born to play Black Adam… The film has, without question, some of the biggest action sequences I’ve ever been part of.”

Black Adam was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who directed Johnson in his recent Disney hit Jungle Cruise. In addition to bringing Black Adam into the DCEU, the film will also introduce the Justice Society of America– Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. In the comics, Adrianna Tomaz becomes the superhero Isis, but we’ll have to wait and see if she follows that story in the film(s).

Also during FanDome, Brosnan shared:

“I’ve done James Bond for 10 years, four films. Nothing compares to this.”

The film is a joint venture between Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. It will be released on July 29, 2022.
