Pierce Brosnan, best known for playing British superspy James “007” Bond, joins the cast of Black Adam playing the magic-using Dr. Fate, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The character first appeared in comics back in 1940 (More Fun Comics #55). He has had a long career with several heroes taking up the mantle (and the Helmet) of Fate. He also helped found the Justice Society of America (All-Star Comics #3).
Brosnan will play the original Dr. Fate, Kent Nelson. Nelson discovered the tomb of an ancient wizard, Nabu. There, Nabu trained Nelson in the ways of sorcery. He gives Nelson the Helmet of Fate which is the focus of his magic powers. Nelson also receives the Amulet of Anubis, which grants him even more magic as well as holds the souls of those who have borne the mantle of Fate and the Cloak of Destiny.
Created by comics legend Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman, Dr. Fate has been a long-time member of the Justice Society and has appeared alongside the team in many live-action and animated television adaptions, most famously in Smallville’s final season and most recently on Stargirl. He has also been a member of the Justice League in the comics as well as on animated series like Justice League and Young Justice.
With the addition of Brosnan, the film gains the last member of the Justice Society for its big-screen debut. Dr. Fate joins Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell). Marwan Jenzari will be playing a secret character. Black Adam will, of course, be played by Johnson. Under the direction of Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie begins filming this April in Atlanta, GA.
Black Adam is the long-time nemesis to Shazam! (originally named Captain Marvel). This new film is produced by New Line, who also produced 2019’s Shazam film, starring Zachary Levi. Their plans bring the two characters together in an upcoming sequel.
