Another member of the Justice Society of America has joined the Black Adam film. Quintessa Swindell has been officially cast as Maxine Hunkel/Cyclone, the wind-controlling granddaughter of the original Red Tornado, Abigail Mathilda “Ma” Hunkel. Swindell is a relative newcomer and playing Tabitha Foster on Netflix’s Trinkets is essentially their big break. Prior to that, they appeared on HBO’s Euphoria. Swindell will next be seen in Neil Burger’s sci-fi thriller Voyagers and the indie Granada Nights.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise) is set to direct, while Dwayne Johnson will star as DC’s titular antihero. In the comics, Black Adam has a complicated history with the Justice Society, and the first superhero team factors into the film, but we’ll have to wait a while to find out how. Aldis Hodge (Hidden Figures, Straight Outta Compton) is playing Hawkman/Carter Hall, while Noah Centineo (Netflix’s To All the Boys I Loved Before franchise) is playing Atom-Smasher/Al Rothstein. In addition, Sarah Shahi has been cast in a mystery role, which is most likely some variation of Andrea Tomaz, the alter ego of Black Adam’s comic book lover, a.k.a. the superbeing Isis.
Johnson has already issued a tweet welcoming Swindell to the cast:
Ready to rumble⚡️??
A pleasure to officially welcome, Quintessa Swindell to our BLACK ADAM cast.
They’ll be taking on the role of CYCLONE.
Can’t wait to work with them and we ready to rumble in the DC jungle. #bringit#cyclone? #blackadam⚡️
Production starts spring 2021 pic.twitter.com/kIlHkZBmgh— Dwayne Johnson (@TheRock) December 14, 2020
Maxine Hunkel is an excitable teenage girl who can be something of a “chatterbox.” She is obsessed with The Wizard of Oz and Wicked and modeled some of her costume after those works, including striped stockings like those worn by the Wicked Witch of the East, and a pointed “witch’s hat.”
We’ll see if the movie version remains such a fangirl or if they will take a different approach.
Black Adam has not begun filming yet and it currently doesn’t have a release date, but check back for updates!
