Over a decade after its initial announcement as “in development,” Warner Bros. and DC ComicsBlack Adam film finally has a release date!

Over the weekend, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson revealed the film’s official release date during a brief spot on TBS just ahead of the UCLA vs Alabama NCAA tournament basketball game. The DC Comics superhero film Black Adam is now officially set to release on July 29, 2022.

Following the announcement on TBS, Johnson also posted the news to both his Instagram and Twitter accounts, showing footage of massive digital screens all across New York City’s famous Times Square alight with the thunderous announcement and release date information.

Dwayne Johnson also announced the news in the promo spot on TBS:

The Hierarchy of Power in the DC Universe is about to Change

The long in development Black Adam film is coming from director Jaume Collet-Serra, who recently directed Johnson and Emily Blunt in the upcoming Jungle Cruise film for Disney, based on a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, and Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo are set to produce the film with FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon executive producing.

In addition to Dwayne Johnson’s titular character, Black Adam is set to star a wide variety of classic DC Comics characters including Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone.

What’s interesting is that the Black Adam character has traditionally served as a villain to DC Comics hero Shazam rather than as a hero himself. The Shazam character recently had his own film in 2019 starring Zachary Levi and has a sequel on the way.

Does this mean we can look forward to seeing Johnson’s Black Adam facing off with Levi’s Shazam in the not too distant future? Could this be a sign that Warner Bros. is finally taking a page out of Marvel Studios‘ book and building up to something instead of just throwing everything at the audience at once? Only time will tell for certain, but we can surely hope for bright things in the future of the DC Comics film brand.

It is also very interesting to see that Warner Bros. has pegged the film for July 29, 2022, the same day that Disney has their highly anticipated Indiana Jones 5 set to release. This means that the studio has a lot of faith in this project as a box office contender, or that they have very little faith in it and they needed a scapegoat as to why it bombed when it potentially does.

Either way, we will find out when Black Adam releases on July 29, 2022.
