Anthony Mackie Set To Star In ‘Captain America 4’

It has certainly been an interesting ride for fans of the Captain America franchise in recent years. The end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe saw Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) retiring from the Captain America name to go off and live his life in the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019). His close friend and longtime partner Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) was bequeathed the iconic vibranium shield along with Steve’s hopes that he would take up the Captain America mantle. Sam’s journey would continue in the early stages of Phase 4 with his Disney+ streaming series The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, where Sam would work alongside Steve’s other closest friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) to defend the Captain America name from those who couldn’t live up to it. The series ended with Sam finally taking up the shield as the all-new Captain America. But where does he go next?

Well, he’s heading back to the big screen with his own movie! Deadline is reporting that Anthony Mackie has officially signed a deal with Marvel Studios to star as the titular hero in a fourth Captain America film. Unofficially titled Captain America 4 (creative, we know), the project’s working title would seem to imply that this film is meant to give Anthony Mackie the chance to really shine in the Captain America role now that he has donned the new star-spangled wing-suit.

Mackie first joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He has since appeared in six additional Marvel films as Sam Wilson before starring in his own Disney+ series alongside Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.

While nothing has been reported yet, it is probably safe to assume that Captain America franchise regular Sebastian Stan will be returning as Bucky Barnes for the new film. Stan has appeared in all three of the previous Captain America films and was a co-lead on The Falcon And The Winter Soldier alongside Anthony Mackie, so it wouldn’t be too surprising to see him continue to make appearances in future installments of the Captain America franchise.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier head writer and series creator Malcolm Spellman and series staff writer Dalan Musson are said to be writing the script for Captain America 4. As Marvel Studios tends to keep the details of its projects very hush-hush, there is currently no additional information as to what else this movie will entail, when it is planned to take place, or what other MCU stars may be involved with one exception; former franchise star Chris Evans. While Evans is rumored to be making future appearances in the MCU, the former Captain America actor is said to not be involved in this project in any capacity to allow Anthony Mackie to grow in his new role.

If you still need to catch up, you can currently catch all three Captain America films, all four Avengers films, and the complete series of The Falcon And The Winter Soldier streaming on the Disney+ subscription streaming service.
