Much like its title implies, it seems that Amazon Studios and Robert Kirkman’s Invincible is exactly that! The animated superhero series just finished up its first season last week and has now received a renewal for at least two more full seasons.

The show is based on the comic book title of the same name from Robert Kirkman. In addition to having created Invincible, Kirkman is both writing and executive producing the show. The writer is best known for having created the hit comic-turned-mass-media-franchise The Walking Dead. In a statement, Kirkman expressed his gratitude for how audiences and Amazon have embraced the show.

I’m extremely thankful to Amazon for the support and dedication they’ve put behind Invincible. The comic book is truly a love letter to a genre that Cory (Walker) and I grew up reading and loving, and it’s been a gratifying journey to watch our characters come to life again through the animated series. We’re beyond excited to continue this story for at least two more seasons.

Invincible tells the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), a seventeen-year-old rookie superhero who discovers his father (J.K. Simmons) is actually the Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero the world has ever known. Will Mark ever be able to live up to his father’s legacy? When he finds out out truth, will he even want to?

The series is jam-packed with A-list talent, even aside from its two leads, with voice work from actors like Gillian Jacobs (Community), Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express), Mark Hamill (Star Wars), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Walton Goggins (Vice Principals), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Mahershala Ali (Alita: Battle Angel), Jason Mantzoukas (The Good Place), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek) and Khary Payton (The Walking Dead) just to name a few! Here’s hoping that Invincible can keep up the momentum and continue to bring in top-tier talent as the series continues.

Invincible is Amazon’s second venture into the world of comic book superheroes following their hit live-action comic book adaptation of The Boys. They are wisely taking the route that few other companies have chosen by adapting series meant strictly for adults rather than family-friendly heroes. This makes a lot of sense for a streaming service as they do not need to worry about box office numbers and reaching a wider audience with their subscription base already built-in. After the massive success of The Boys and now the first season of Invincible, it looks as though Amazon has a good idea of what they are doing with these adaptations.

Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios Vernon Sanders said in a statement announcing Invincible‘s two-season renewal:

Invincible is a crowning example of how a fresh and edgy approach to the superhero genre can resonate with audiences around the globe and we’re so glad that Invincible, one of our earliest investments in the adult animation genre, has accomplished just that. Robert’s no-holds-barred storytelling coupled with a first-class voice cast delivered on fans’ wildest expectations and we’re thrilled to be giving them more Invincible.

Will Invincible become the next household name in superheroes? Only time will tell. Here’s hoping the show continues to be successful and can extend its life well beyond the announced third season!
