Third ‘Spider-Man’ To Feature Three Spider-Men?

Is the Spider-Verse coming to live action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? In a new marketing video posted on the official YouTube account of Sony Channel Latin America, Sony seems to be teasing that this could be happening sooner than we think! In the video (which has already been taken down by Sony but has been reposted by @Lactudesheroes), we see footage of all three live-action Spider-Man actors; Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and our current Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

Holland’s iteration of the character is about to make his sixth appearance in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the currently untitled Spider-Man 3. This film is his third solo film following up Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, as well as appearances in larger MCU ensemble films like Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Sony Entertainment Pictures owns the rights to Spiderman and all related characters, but has been working alongside Marvel Studios to include him as part of the MCU for the last few years as it has been mutually beneficial for both studios.

This new video seems implies that Sony is getting more hands on with the marketing of the character. While it is entirely possible that they are just trying to showcase the legacy of the Spider-Man film history by featuring all clips of all three live-action versions of the character, the text included in the video would suggest otherwise.

When translated, the text on the video reads: “Who is your favorite Spider-Man? You don’t have to choose — in the Marvel Multiverse, anything can happen“. This would seem to suggest that we may see all three versions of the character eventually working together and we will no longer need to pick a favorite version to enjoy.

While it is entirely possible that this video is just meant be a fun question to think about, it has long been rumored that Marvel Studio’s post Infinity Saga plans involved delving into different alternative realities of the Marvel Multiverse. The next Doctor Strange film is even titled Doctor Strange: Multiverse Of Madness, and as Benedict Cumberbatch’s MCU version of Doctor Strange is set to be making an appearance in Spider-Man 3, it lends even further credibility to these claims.

To add even more fuel to the flames of a live-action Spider-Verse potentially happening, we have long heard rumors that Jamie Foxx has been cast for the untitled third MCU Spider-Man movie to reprise his role as Electro. He previously played the role in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 opposite Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man.

We have already had J.K. Simmons reprise his role as J. Jonah Jameson from the original Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man trilogy in a brief appearance at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. In his first MCU appearance Jameson seemed like a very different take on the classic character, rather than the same version he previously played.

While all of this alludes to the Spider-Verse possibly heading to the MCU, it’s worth noting that the ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home set up a very different story for this upcoming sequel. It is entirely possible that the marketing team at Sony simply has no idea what Marvel Studios has planned for the character and is just trying to build hype up around the Spider-Man brand.

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is well known for keeping story details quiet surrounding upcoming Marvel films. This yet to be titled Spider-Man 3 has already begun production, so it is likely more details will begin to leak out soon!
