‘Rise Of Skywalker’ Leads The Nominations For The 46th Saturn Awards – Full Nominations List

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
Disney

The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films has announced the nominees for the 46th Saturn Awards. Created to honor genre films and television projects, the Saturn Awards aim to celebrate the movies that more prestigious entities like the Academy Awards and Golden Globes tend to ignore. In addition to sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, the Saturn Awards honor action, and comic book-based projects.

To be considered for this year’s awards, a film or TV series had to have been released between July 15, 2019 (damn, that was a long-ass time ago!) and November 12, 2020.  It should be noted that there was not a Saturn Awards event last year.

Star Wars Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker was the most nominated project with 12 nods. That was followed by Tenet with nine, and Doctor Sleep with eight. Because the eligibility date goes all the way back to July 2019, that means an oldie like Joker managed to score five nominations. It feels weird paying tribute to something that came out two years ago!

And Joker isn’t the only 2019 entry as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Parasite, and 1917 are also up for multiple awards.

And speaking of those movies, the Saturn Awards have been criticized in recent years for honoring movies in the Action and Thriller categories, which many feel fall too far away from the purpose of the awards. In both the film and TV areas, most of the acting nominations aren’t for genre fare but for “prestige” projects like Daniel Craig for Knives Out as one example, or Better Call Saul which has five noms in the TV categories.

There are some questionable nominations elsewhere. Why is Mulan nominated as an Action movie when The Lion King is up for Fantasy?  And for that matter, why isn’t it nominated for Animated?

And why is Norman Reedus in the Supporting Actor category for The Walking Dead?  He’s the star of the show!

But anyway, the 45th awards were the first to be streamed so audiences at home could watch them. Aisha Tyler hosted. The organizers hope to hold another live ceremony sometime later this year.
