This year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards are so huge the event has been split into two consecutive nights– May 16 and 17. The first night will honor favorites in scripted entertainment, while the second will be devoted to unscripted (a.k.a. reality) programming.
Disney+’s WandaVision further flexes its pop culture muscle as the most nominated project with five nods– Best Show, Best Performance in a Show for Elizabeth Olsen, Best Hero for Teyonah Parris, Best Villain for Kathryn Hahn, and Best Fight for Wanda vs. Agatha.
Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys landed four nominations. It is up against WandaVision in the Best Show category. Also nominated are Bridgerton, Cobra Kai, and Emily in Paris. Jack Quaid is also up for Best Hero, against Parris, Anthony Mackie for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman 1984, and Pedro Pascal for The Mandalorian.
Aya Cash is nominated for Best Villain for her depiction of the secret nazi, Stormfront. She and Hahn are up against Ewan McGregor for Birds of Prey, Giancarlo Esposito for The Mandalorian, and Nicholas Hoult for The Great.
Finally, the “Girls Get Things Done” battle between Starlight, Queen Maeve, Kimiko vs. Stormfront is up for Best Fight, against Wanda vs. Agatha, and the funhouse battle in Birds of Prey, the finale house fight in Cobra Kai, and the finale battle in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Honestly, I can’t make heads or tails of the movie categories. The Best Movie candidates are a disparate bunch– Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Judas and the Black Messiah, Promising Young Woman, Soul, and To All the Boys: Always and Forever. None of these have anything in common. And honestly, none of them is a movie that I would consider the Best.
It should be mentioned that Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman has been nominated posthumously for the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He is also nominated for the Academy Award for this performance. Boseman won the MTV Movie & TV Awards for Best Performance in a Movie, Best Hero, and Best Fight (with Winston Duke) for Black Panther in 2018. The film also won Best On-Screen Team for Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Letitia Wright.
