Sorry Puddin’, Margot Robbie Says There Are No Plans For A ‘Birds Of Prey’ Sequel

Despite being a REALLY GOOD MOVIE, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) didn’t have a strong opening when it hit theaters in February, just before COVID-19 forced theaters to shut down. The movie was rushed to a digital release, but it simply wasn’t able to find its footing, which means that we most likely won’t get any additional cinematic exploits of this DC girl supergroup.

At one time, there were plans for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn to go on to star in multiple movies including Gotham City Sirens, with Catwoman and Poison Ivy, and a flick focusing on Harley and Jared Leto’s Joker. But Birds of Prey‘s lackluster performance may have squelched any further Harley-centric projects on the big screen.

Robbie herself stated that there don’t seem to be any plans for a sequel to Birds of Prey at this point:

” I don’t know. Nothing imminent at this stage, nothing worth mentioning.”

Robbie also acted as executive producer of Birds of Prey. The film co-starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead as The Huntress/Helena Bertinelli, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary/Dinah Lance, Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Ali Wong as district attorney Ellen Yee, and Ewan McGregor as crime boss Black Mask/Roman Sionis.  Cathy Yan directed, based on a script by Christina Hodson.

Robbie made her debut as Harley Quinn in the first Suicide Squad movie, which was released in 2016. David Ayer wrote and directed. She will return in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is described as not being a sequel per se.  We’ll see what that means when it is released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.

The Suicide Squad also stars Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Alice Braga as Sol Soria, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Michael Rooker as Savant, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K., Storm Reid as Tyla (daughter of Bloodsport), Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Steve Agee as King Shark (motion capture and voice) and John Economos, the warden of the Belle Reve prison, Sean Gunn as Weasel (motion capture and voice), Joaquín Cosío as Mateo Suárez, Juan Diego Botto as South American dictator Silvio Luna, Flula Borg as Javelin, Tinashe Kajese as Flo Crawley, Mayling Ng as Mongal, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, plus Julio Ruiz, Sylvester Stallone, and Taika Waititi in mystery roles.

Are you sad to hear that it doesn’t look as though Birds of Prey will get a sequel?
