Variety reported today that Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke is in negotiations with Marvel to join the cast of Secret Invasion. The upcoming Disney+ event series, based on the comic of the same name already stars Samuel L. Jackson (as Nick Fury) and Ben Mendelsohn (as the Skrull Talos, who first appeared in Captain Marvel.) Kingsley Ben-Adir and Olivia Colman are also in the cast.
In the comics, Secret Invasion tells the story of the Skrulls’ attempt to conquer the Earth. But instead of a frontal assault against the Avengers and the other heroes of the Marvel Universe, the Skrulls used their shapeshifting abilities to replace Marvel heroes and villains in preparation for a large-scale attack. In doing so, they sowed confusion and distrust and weakened the Earth’s defenders. Several major Marvel characters, such as Spider-Woman, Ant-Man Hank Pym, Elektra, and Black Bolt from the Inhumans, were all discovered to be Skrulls.
Officially, neither Marvel Studios nor representatives for Clarke would confirm or deny the news. If I were a betting man, I would put money down on her playing Skrull Princess Veranke. In the comics, Vernake plans the Invasion and replaces Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew. Of course, since Disney does not have the rights to Spider-Woman, a different Marvel hero will have to be used. Or they may create a new character for the series.
Secret Invasion was announced last December at Disney’s big Investors Day Zoom Conference. There we also first heard about Armor Wars, I am Groot, and Ironheart. News of Star Wars projects like Lando, Ashoka, and the Rogue Squadron feature film, among other in-development projects at the Mouse House, also broke at the event.
