RUMOR: Willem Dafoe And Thomas Haden Church Back For Third ‘Spider-Man’ Movie?

Somehow, over a decade after Sony’s Spider-Man 3 was lambasted by both critics and fans alike as being “too crowded,” the team at Sony is working with Marvel Studios to outdo themselves with what looks to be the most jam-packed and ambitious sequel of all time with an all-new third Spider-Man film!

The yet to be titled threequel follows up the successful reboot of the character as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where the character has appeared in five films so far (two solo Spider-Man films and three larger crossover films with The Avengers). Before this iteration of the Spider-Man franchise starring Tom Holland from director Jon Watts, we had two previous versions that graced the silver screen with the original Sam Raimi trilogy of Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire (2002-2007), and the two Amazing Spider-Man films from director Marc Webb starring Andrew Garfield (2012-2014). Now Sony is supposedly looking to bring things full circle by bringing us a film that will combine all three of them!

This week new rumors surfaced that claim two more major players from the original Raimi trilogy are now planning to head to this upcoming sequel. The Illuminerdi is reporting that Willem Dafoe and Thomas Haden Church, who had played The Green Goblin in Spider-Man (2002) and Sandman in Spider-Man 3 (2007) respectively, are in talks to reprise their previous roles in this new Spider-Man film.

They are reporting that neither of these actors has been confirmed, but there are definitely talks happening with hopes of bringing them onboard. Whether these talks are successful is not guaranteed, but this does tell us that Sony and Marvel have worked both of these characters into their current plans for the film.

These rumors follow a slew of casting news, including the confirmed return of Jamie Foxx as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 (2004), and with Benedict Cumberbatch set to appear from his own adjacent self-titled Marvel franchise as Doctor Strange. Meanwhile, we have rumors that Andrew Garfield‘s Spider-Man (2012-2014) and Kirsten Dunst‘s Maryjane Watson (2002-2007) are also a lock to return, with Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman (2002-2007) and Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy (2012-2014) still in negotiations for an appearance in the film. Even wilder is the rumor that Charlie Cox, who played Marvel vigilante Daredevil in the now cancelled television series of the same name, may be making an appearance as his superhero’s alter-ego, blind lawyer Matt Murdock.

This is all in addition to the returning cast from the current Spider-Man films, which would include Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and Marisa Tomei. The story has been kept under wraps so far. However, based on the confirmed inclusion of Doctor Strange, many are expecting a universe-jumping adventure where Tom Holland’s Spider-Man travels across various different realities. This would explain why so many characters from previous versions of the franchise would be making appearances. With the web-slinger jumping around between realities, rather than having realities converging with one another, it would also set the film apart from its animated counterpart Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse.

The currently untitled third Spider-Man film is currently already shooting in Atlanta with director Jon Watts returning behind the camera. It is expected to release just under a year from now on December 17, 2021.
