It looks like the latest Spider-Man movie is certainly shaping up to be the most ambitious crossover since Avengers: Endgame with some new casting news that is sure to get your Spider-Sense tingling!

Collider is reporting that both Andrew Garfield and Kirsten Dunst are confirmed as returning to their former roles for the next chapter in the Spider-Man saga! Garfield previously portrayed the franchise’s titular character Spider-Man in the Amazing Spider-Man films from 2011 through 2014, while Dunst played the role of Spider-Man’s love interest Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man film trilogy from 2002 through 2007.

The pair join Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro as returning characters from earlier iterations of the Spider-Man film franchise for the new yet to be titled third Spider-Man film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It has been heavily rumored that Sony and Marvel are close to a deal with original Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire to also return as the first Peter Parker to grace the silver screen. There have also been talks of Emma Stone reprising her character Gwen Stacy, who was Spider-Man’s love interest during the Andrew Garfield era of the series, but with her current pregnancy, this could go either way. As the new Spider-Man films head into the Marvel Multiverse, who knows what could happen and who might show up?

He will be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, who looks to be stepping into the mentor role left vacant by the untimely death of Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man franchise regulars like Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori are also expected to appear in the film which has director Jon Watts behind the camera once again. Watts’ previously directed Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home; the latter of which became the highest-grossing film in the Spider-Man franchise yet, having brought in over $1 billion worldwide.

Sony and Marvel’s untitled third Spider-Man film is set to release on December 17, 2021.
