Take this one with a massive grain of salt, but rumors are running rampant that Charlie Cox is set to return as Daredevil in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as soon as next year’s third Spider-Man film.

As reported by Murphy’s Multiverse, Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is set to return to the MCU now that the character rights have transitioned back into Marvel Studios hands. Cox last portrayed the “blind lawyer by day and masked hero by night” Matt Murdock / Daredevil in a Netflix television series based on the character for three seasons.

Unfortunately, the Daredevil show was canceled in 2018, just after the third season premiered. As the character rights option for Netflix lasted for two years after the series cancellation date, the rights only went back into Marvel’s hands in recent weeks. Leading up to this transition, #SaveDaredevil began trending on social media – courtesy of fans trying to have Marvel Studios revive the television series. It sounds like the plan may have worked on some level if these rumors are true and Charlie Cox is indeed returning to the role.

It isn’t yet clear whether Cox will be appearing in the third Spider-Man film as Matt Murdock the lawyer or as Daredevil the masked hero; although it’s entirely possible he will be doing both. What plans Marvel has for the character outside of this appearance, be it a film or a new television series, is currently up in the air.

Murphys Multiverse implied that Cox may be the only one reprising his Daredevil role from the Netflix series and that we shouldn’t be hopeful of seeing any of the show’s supporting cast of characters.

Cox had previously denied his involvement with the upcoming Spider-Man film in an interview with ComicBook last year, following a number of fan theories regarding Matt Murdock using his prowess as a lawyer to help Peter Parker out of a sticky situation. It’s entirely possible that at the time he wasn’t yet in talks to reprise the role, or he may have just been trying to keep a lid on things until after the Netflix rights had expired.

Either way, Disney has a massive investor’s meeting happening later this week where they are expected to be announcing a full slate of new projects for a number of their brands including Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar. It is likely that we’ll be hearing a number of casting announcements during this, and entirely possible that we could hear something new about the Daredevil character sooner rather than later.

The untitled third Spider-Man film is currently filming and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker in his sixth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He will be joined by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, as well as Spider-Man franchise regulars  Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon, and Tony Revolori. It is heavily rumored to feature appearances by previous franchise stars including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Alfred Molina among others.

Director Jon Watts is stepping behind the camera again after previously directing Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home; the latter of which became the highest-grossing film in the Spider-Man franchise yet, having brought in over $1 billion worldwide.

Sony and Marvel’s untitled third Spider-Man film is set to release on December 17, 2021.
