‘Creature Commandos’ Finds Its Cast Headed By David Harbour And Frank Grillo

The new iteration of the DC Universe is taking shape, following the establishment of DC Studios under the Warner Bros. umbrella and the appointment of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the heads.  While the duo is working to reintroduce a new cinematic version of Superman, Gunn isn’t straying too far from the quirkier side of things.

One of the initial announcements was Creature Commandos, an obscure concept from the pages of DC Comics which will be adapted in both animation and live action.  Like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, this is a ragtag gang of misfits. This is right up Gunn’s alley.  Now, the cast has been announced, with the actors expected to not only voice these characters in the animated series for Max but also to appear in live-action further down the line.

David Harbour in Hellboy
Lionsgate

David Harbour seems to be a glutton for punishment when it comes to getting buried under pounds of makeup and prosthetics.  After portraying Hellboy in the poorly-received 2019 reboot, he’s back! Harbour is set to head up the cast of Creature Commandos as Eric Frankenstein, a smarter, more militaristic take on the classic monster, who — let’s be real — bears quite a resemblance to Hellboy.

Harbour is best known for playing Chief Hopper on Stranger Things, but he has since joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Red Guardian.  He first played this role in Black Widow and is set to return in Thunderbolts.

Frank Grillo in Warrior
Cinemax

Another Marvel actor, Frank Grillo, will join Harbour in Creature Commandos as Rick Flag, Sr., the father of Joel Kinnaman’s character from the first two Suicide Squad movies.  Grillo previously played Crossbones in the MCU.

The cast of Creature Commandos also includes Indira Varma, Alan Tudyk, Maria Bakalova, Zoe Chao, Steve Agee, and more.

While Harbour and Grillo may be the bigger names, it appears that Creature Commandos will actually focus on The Bride of Frankenstein, played by Varma.

In addition, Chao will voice/play Nina Mazursky, the amphibious scientist, while Tudyk will voice/play Doctor Phosphorus, a radioactive villain who frequently fights Batman in the comics.  Sean Gunn reprises his role as Weasle, a character that he played in The Suicide Squad.  (Who also died in The Suicide Squad, so how he comes back is a mystery.

It appears James Gunn will voice G.I. Robot himself.

Viola Davis is expected to return as Amanda Waller, the role she has played in both Suicide Squad movies and the Peacemaker TV show and the upcoming Waller series.  Agee, who provided the motion capture for King Shark in The Suicide Squad, will presumably play John Economos, his role from Peacemaker who recently made a cameo in Shazam!: Fury of the Gods.

This might not be the most obvious project to kick off the new DC Universe, but it’s certainly something that plays to Gunn’s strengths.

What do you think so far?  Are you looking forward to Creature Commandos?
