David Harbour’s Red Guardian Busts Out In This Clip From ‘Black Widow’

At long last, after multiple delays (thanks, COVID!) Disney’s Black Widow is finally getting ready to slam theaters this weekend and in anticipation, a clip from the movie has been released as a preview.  Don’t worry, it’s not particularly SPOILERY.

We kind of already knew this movie was about Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) “getting the band back together” and reuniting with her fellow Black Widows, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, as well as David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian.  It’s not clear how Shostakov will be depicted in Black Widow, but it appears that he is Russia’s answer to Captain America and he is some sort of Super Soldier.  Shostakov is Natasha’s ex-husband in the comics, but we’ll have to wait and see if the movie will go that route.

In this new clip, we see Natasha and Yelena in a helicopter attempting to break Alexei out of a Russian prison.  Things don’t go according to plan, but we do get to see Harbour flex some of his superhuman muscles as he attempts to scale a wall.

Black Widow also stars O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with a past romantic connection to Natasha.  The film’s villain is the Taskmaster, but it remains to be seen who is under that skull mask.  Most are betting on either Weisz’s Melina Vostokoff, who, in the comics, is the villain Iron Maiden, or Rick Mason.  But who knows?  The filmmakers could throw us for a real loop with a completely unexpected reveal.  (It’s probably not Yelena Belova, though, as it is expected that she will replace Natasha in upcoming projects.)

Cate Shortland (SMILF) directed Black Widow, with a screenplay by Eric Pearson, based on a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson.  The film will be released on July 9, 2021, both in theaters and via Disney+ with Premier Access.  (Meaning it’s $30 extra if you want to stream it, although that also means you own it and can watch it as many times as you like.)

What do you think?  Are you excited to re-enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in movie form?
