Hellboy is one of those rare comic book characters that truly broke the mold when he first premiered and grew into a pop culture phenomenon. The demonic paranormal special agent who himself came straight from hell has spent the better part of the last three decades etching out a strong fanbase. Hellboy has had appearances in almost every form of mainstream media including comic books, multiple live-action films, animated features, video games, novels, toys and collectibles, and even consumables like hot sauce, multiple beers, and even his very own brand of whiskey! Now the man who created the reluctant harbinger of doom, Mike Mignola, is getting a feature-length documentary to tell a story that is vastly different from that of Hellboy’s… his own.

This all-new documentary, titled Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters, will tell Mignola’s story from his early days inking at Marvel Comics to his current work. The project is expected to be a deep dive into Mignola’s long and storied career that has made him one of the most iconic names in the comics industry. You can check out the first trailer below!

Mike Mignola himself is heavily involved and is interviewed extensively in the project. The feature-length documentary is also set to feature interviews with several high-profile names across various corners of the entertainment industry including Dark Horse Comics founder Mike Richardson, Oscar-winning director Guillermo Del Toro, Marvel Comics EVP of creative development Joe Quesada, and critically acclaimed author Neil Gaiman. The documentary will also feature Hellboy cast members including Doug Jones (who played Abe Sapien in Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)) and Vanessa Eichholtlz (who played Ilsa Hepstein in Hellboy (2019)) amongst a number of other people who have had their lives and careers affected by Mike Mignola’s work.

Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters was recently announced by co-directors and producers Kevin Hanna and Jim Demonakos via a press release that discussed the project’s new Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The Kickstarter campaign launched this past week and will run for the next few weeks through the end of March and is in place to secure financing for additional filming as well as editing and scoring the project. In the press release, producer Kevin Hanna said:

There’s already eighty hours of footage in the can that we have shot over the last year and a half. This is an ambitious in-depth documentary to celebrate Mignola’s legacy in style.

The project is already well past its funding goal (as of the time of this writing, the project has raised $255,000+ of its $58,000 goal), but those who still want to support the project can look forward to some pretty phenomenal rewards for their support. Backer rewards for Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters include digital and Blu-ray copies of the finished documentary, art prints, tee-shirts, and even an associate producer credit at the lofty $3000 donation tier (or executive producer for $7500)! In regards to the use of Kickstarter to fund finishing this very ambitious project, producer Jim Demonakos explained:

We’re bringing the project to Kickstarter to secure the financing to shoot additional interviews, edit the film and score, and bring the film to market. We want existing fans and curious readers alike to experience Mignola’s art and his incredible world of monsters and misfits.

The Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters documentary is still in production and is expected to finish shooting before the year’s end. It is anticipated to be completed and released sometime in the first half of 2022. You can check out the Kickstarter campaign and back the project here!
