Tom Cruise Saw ‘The Flash’ And Says It’s “Everything You Want In A Movie”

Warner Bros. and DC could use some positive press now that Shazam!: Fury of the Gods has been roasted by critics and generated a terrible opening weekend.  But there are still two DC movies coming out this year as part of the older regime at WB: The Flash, which has been marred by the controversies surrounding star Ezra Miller and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom.

Many have speculated that WB should probably write off The Flash (as they did with Batgirl) due to Miller’s criminal behavior. Still, the film, directed by It‘s Andy Muschietti, seems to be so good that WB remains steadfast that this picture will come out in theaters.  The studio has just kept pushing its release back, perhaps hoping to distance it from the Miller scandals (although I’m sure more factors at play).

But over the last several months, many close to the project have murmured that The Flash is an excellent film and one of the best superhero movies ever.  Of course, those were clandestine leaks, so take them with a grain of salt.  But now a Hollywood heavyweight has weighed in — one Mister Tom Cruise.

The star of last year’s biggest hit, Top Gun: Maverick, was intrigued by the buzz surrounding The Flash and requested a private screening.  A courier from WB went to Cruise’s home to show him the film. The actor had an effusive and glowing reaction, so much so that he cold-phoned director Muschietti to gush about how much he loved it.  Although this was a private conversation, reportedly, Cruise told Muschietti that The Flash is “everything you want in a movie” and “this is the kind of movie we need now.”

He would know.  Top Gun: Maverick was one of the biggest hits to come out of the COVID-19 pandemic and is credited for drawing older movie fans back to theaters.  You could certainly say that Maverick was “everything you want in a movie” and “the kind of movie we need now” (or at least last year).

Tom Cruise has been nominated for four Oscars and appeared in dozens of beloved films.  For many years, he was attached to play Tony Stark in Iron Man long before the launch of the MCU.  So he has some knowledge of comic books.

But Cruise is a divisive figure who has demonstrated odd behavior in the past and, of course, there’s that whole church he attends that turns a lot of people off.

What do you think?  Does Cruise’s endorsement of The Flash make you more or less interested in seeing this movie when it finally arrives on July 16?
