‘Game Of Thrones’ Vet Pilou Asbæk Washes Ashore In ‘Aquaman 2’

Game of Thrones vet, Pilou Asbæk is diving into the deep end by joining the cast of James Wan’s Aquaman 2. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first movie, returned to pen the sequel. Wan previously expressed plans to begin filming in the UK in June. Jason Momoa will return as Aquaman/Arthur Curry, along with Amber Heard as Mera, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. It hasn’t been confirmed, but it is expected that Randall Park will also be back as Dr. Stephen Shin.

Danish actor, Asbæk is best known for playing Euron Greyjoy on Game of Thrones. More recently he starred in HBO Max’s miniseries The Investigation. Earlier this year, Asbæk appeared opposite Anthony Mackie in the Netflix movie Outside the Wire  On the big screen, he has been seen in Ben-Hur, The Great Wall, Ghost in the Shell, and Overlord.

Asbæk’s potential role in Aquaman 2 is unknown. It is believed that Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta will be the main villain, after having a smaller role in the first movie. It is possible that Asbæk is playing another foe, but unfortunately, Aquaman doesn’t have a vast rogue’s gallery. A few possibilities are The Fisherman, The Scavenger, or Charybdis, the villain responsible for Aquaman losing his left hand.

However, back in 2019, it was rumored that Aquaman 2 would further borrow from the Geoff Johns run of the comic books (the first movie was VERY much based on that run) and introduce The Others, a gathering of international heroes that Aquaman has secretly been a member of for years, well before the Justice League ever formed.

If that is the case, and this is just a guess, but Asbæk may be playing one of them, and the most likely candidate is Vostok-X.

Each of The Others possesses a golden Atlantean object of power. Aquaman’s is his trident. Vostok-X’s is his mask which makes it so he doesn’t have to breathe, sleep, or eat. He also wears a jetpack. In the comics, however, Vostok-X is Russian, but perhaps Pilou Asbæk can pull off an accent or maybe the film will tweak the character. Or then again, maybe he’s not playing this character at all. In fact, it was never officially announced that The Others were 100% going to be in Aquaman 2.

The first Aquaman came out in December 2018 and was a massive hit, grossing over $1 billion dollars, making it the highest-grossing movie to feature a DC Comics character.  (Since then, Joker also grossed over $1 billion in 2019, but it still didn’t make quite as much as Aquaman.)

Warner Bros. recently pulled the plug on a planned spin-off movie based on the monstrous Trench, from the first movie.

Aquaman 2 is scheduled to splash into theaters on December 16, 2022.  Check back for updates as they arrive!
