A Grizzled Nick Fury Returns To Earth And The MCU In New Trailer For ‘Secret Invasion’

It’s been a few years since Nick Fury had an impact on the events of the MCU. He showed briefly during the mid-credits scene for Avengers Infinity War where he called on the help of Captain Marvel, then recruited Spider-Man to stop Elementals from destroying the world in Spider-Man: Far From Home before he was revealed as a Skrull. So Fury’s return to action should be a pivotal moment for the MCU.

Thankfully, judging by the trailer that was revealed at D23—the Disney expo showcasing the studio’s upcoming projects—that’s exactly what Secret Invasion will be. You can watch the trailer above.

Based on the 2008 comic-crossover story of the same name, Secret Invasion finds a team of Skrulls, the shape-shifting aliens from Captain Marvel, infiltrating the highest offices of Earth in a plot to take over the world. Instead of going the film route for this story, Marvel and Disney have opted for a Disney+ series, allowing them to spread the event out over six episodes and create a deeper, richer story.

The trailer opens on a grizzled Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson in all his glory, returning to Earth after being in space for the past few years. He reconnects with Maria Hill, his SHIELD second-in-command, with Cobie Smulders returning in the role. While the trailer doesn’t reveal much of the plot, the series will no doubt be full of intrigue and deception, as that’s what being a shape-shifting alien is all about.

Secret Invasion also marks the return of Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos, Don Cheadle as James Rhodes, and Martin Freeman as Everett Ross. It’ll be nice to see all of these supporting characters fleshed out and given more major roles. I also hope they lean hard into the covert, cloak-and-dagger aspect of these special agents.

The series also stars Game of ThronesEmilia Clarke in a yet-unrevealed role, but she pops up a couple of times in the trailer.

No release date has been set for Secret Invasion yet, but it is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2023.
