Despite the ills that 2020 wrought on the world, one of the few bright spots of that year was the plethora of Marvel shows Disney had planned for their fledgling streaming service, Disney+. Last December, at the Disney Investor Day event, one of the series that was announced was an adaptation of the popular Marvel comic Secret Invasion.

Though very few details were available at that time, this past Friday during Disney+ Day, Marvel… still didn’t shed much light on the series. However, they did tease a single image during their 14-minute montage of their current and planned shows, which included WandaVision, What If…?, and the upcoming Hawkeye. That image, which flashed onscreen for a few seconds right after the Secret Invasion logo, was of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, older, grayer, and far more grizzled than we’re used to.

Secret Invasion, the comic book, tells the tale of a platoon of Skrulls, shape-shifting aliens, infiltrating the highest reaches of government and impersonating key players, including some superheroes. The invasion cast suspicion on many popular characters, with no one knowing who they could trust.

It’s assumed that Secret Invasion, the Disney+ series, will follow the same plotline as the comics. After all, the Skrulls are officially players in the MCU after being introduced in 2019’s Captain Marvel. Since then, the Skrulls have popped up in Spider-Man: Far From Home, in which it was revealed that two of them were impersonating Nick Fury and Maria Hill, as well as the post-credits scene of WandaVision, in which Monica Rambeau is approached by a Skrull who tells her, “I was sent by an old friend of your mother’s.”

Thus far, the Skrulls’ intentions haven’t been revealed to be devious, and it seems as if they’re all working with Fury for some as-yet-unexplained motive. That’s not to say that Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige hasn’t been laying the groundwork behind the scenes for something sinister. After all, judging by the looks of Nick Fury in that image, he’s been through some stuff.

Secret Invasion will star Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Emilia Clarke, and Olivia Coleman, and will be written and executively produced by Kyle Bradstreet (Mr. Robot). There is no firm premiere date for the series, but it is expected to hit Disney+ in 2022.
