James Gunn Is Working On A Second ‘The Suicide Squad’ Spin-Off Series; ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Looks Likely

Peacemaker on HBO Max was recently declared the most in-demand streaming show in the world according to Parrot Analytics, topping other high-profile programs like Disney+’s Book of Boba Fett and Netflix’s The Witcher. Not bad for a show that is a spin-off of a box office flop — The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn, who created both, recently revealed that he has an idea for a second series that is also a spin-off from The Suicide Squad and that he thinks the odds are very good that Peacemaker will get a second season.

While appearing on Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, he teased:

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe.  I can’t quite say.”

When asked about a second season of Peacemaker, he responded:

“There’s a really good chance of that.  We’re the biggest show in the world right now.”

The podcast hosts pressed Gunn, suggesting Idris Elba’s Bloodsport and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, it would seem that their schedules are too busy right now. Then Peter Capaldi’s Thinker was suggested. Once again, Gunn refused to budge replying:

“I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a  comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe.”

Hmmm… arguably, the humor is what has made Peacemaker such a big hit. But this is by far the most comedic thing that Gunn has made so far and even his stuff that isn’t as humorous has been mostly successful.

Not only is Peacemaker a hit with viewers, but it is critically acclaimed with an impressive 96% Rotten Tomatoes score. (In truth, The Suicide Squad was also a hit with critics, with a 90% rating. That just didn’t translate to drawing audiences into theaters.)

Gunn wrote the entire series and has directed three of the episodes that have been released so far, and he also helmed two of the three upcoming installments. John Cena reprises the role he played in The Suicide Squad, the Peacemaker, a.k.a. Chris Smith, with Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.

In the meantime, James Gunn is in Atlanta directing Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 for Disney and Marvel Studios.  That picture opens on May 5, 2023.
