Marvel’s long-awaited threequel, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3, officially began production this week! On his personal Twitter account, fan-favorite director James Gunn announced that production was officially underway by posting a candid behind-the-scenes photo of him with the film’s cast. Fans with a keen eye noticed that Gunn may have also casually announced a new cast member joining the film as well!
In a response to his original tweet, Gunn answered a fan’s question and confirmed that their hopes were true and that actor Chukwudi Iwuji had joined Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 in a very coveted role! He described the role as one that “every big-name actor in Hollywood wanted.” Seems that Gunn (and by extension Marvel Studios) has a lot of faith in Iwuji to bring this character to life in a big way.
Chukwudi Iwuji recently worked with James Gunn on the other side of the comic book film spectrum for Warner Bros and DC Entertainment’s Peacemaker (2022), a series that spun off of Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021). In his tweet confirming his casting, Gunn referred to Iwuji as “one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with,” a major compliment from such a key player in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
So who exactly is Chukwudi Iwuji playing? Speculations are boundless as fans have begun tossing names around like The Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Quasar, and The High Evolutionary, just to name a few (our personal favorite pick is still Gladiator of The Shi’ar, but no one is exactly vying for that role so it seems unlikely). The galactic end of the Marvel Universe is vast and full of characters that Iwuji could portray. Only time will tell just how big of a role he will play in the grand scheme of things.
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 features returning stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Gunn, and franchise newcomers Will Poulter and Chukwudi Iwuji. The film is expected to make its way into theaters on May 5, 2023.
