Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the latest star to join Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka. Her role was not disclosed.
The usual crew of Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, who have created the two existing Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett are also behind this new show, with Filoni writing and both executive producing. Filoni created the character Ahsoka Tano for the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and revisited her on Star Wars Rebels. Filoni also wrote and directed The Mandalorian episode “The Jedi” in which Rosario Dawson made her debut as the live-action version of Ahsoka.
Dawson will headline the Ahsoka series, with Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren. Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker, most likely in flashbacks, as Anakin was Ahsoka’s mentor before he became Darth Vader. Ivanna Sakhno has also been cast in an undisclosed role.
Ahsoka will begin production this spring.
This will likely be the fifth Star Wars series for Disney+, as it seems that Obi-Wan and Andor will premiere first. There is also the possibility that The Mandalorian Season 3 could come first as Disney beefs up its original Star Wars content for its streaming service.
Winstead most recently starred in Netflix’s spy thriller Kate. She appeared as The Huntress in the 2020 DC Comics movie Birds of Prey and had a supporting role in the Will Smith X2 movie Gemini Man. One of her most acclaimed roles was that of Nikki Swango on the 2017 season of Fargo. Among her other credits are Live Free or Die Hard, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Thing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Seeing as how Winstead’s Ahsoka role hasn’t been disclosed, it would be safe to assume that she is playing an original character. But who knows? Is there a Star Wars character from a non-film source that you think Winstead would be perfect for?
