Disney+ Day ‘Ms. Marvel’ Clip Teases Kamala’s Origin And Butt-Ugly First Costume

On Friday, a.k.a. Disney+ Day, Disney revealed a barrage of announcements and footage for projects coming to the streaming service in the next few years, including a longer presentation of original Marvel Studios projects.  Among the series beaming into homes next year will be Ms. Marvel, featuring a new character– a 16-year-old Pakistani-American girl named Kamala Khan who idolizes Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and somehow gains the abilities to become a superhero herself.

The series wrapped production in May and it looks as though it’s almost complete with visual effects and all.  Unfortunately, Disney+ has to dole out its original Marvel properties one at a time and Ms. Marvel won’t make its debut until next summer.  But Disney+ teased viewers with a short teaser trailer that shows Kamala (Iman Vellani) being inundated with some type of energy that grants her powers.

In the comics, she gained her abilities from the Terrigen Mist, which turned people into Inhumans.  But Marvel Studios doesn’t seem to want anything to do with the Inhumans, so expect her powers to come from a different source in the MCU.  Though the clip is short, the energy slightly resembles that which gave Monica Rambeau her powers in WandaVision.  And that series took place in Westview, New Jersey, which may be close to Jersey City, the setting for Ms. Marvel, so it’s possible Wanda’s Hex Sphere could have had some effect on nearby locations.

ALSO, keep in mind, both Kamala and Monica (Teyonah Parris) will co-star in the movie The Marvels, along with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel.  So it would make sense that there is a common denominator between these characters and their powers.

Speaking of Kamala and powers, those aren’t on full display in the clip. However, viewers do get a tiny tease at the end which seems to indicate that Kamala will have the power to move across the skyline, shown reflected in the windows of a building as citizens below gaze upward.  (We already know that she won’t have the power to “embiggen” as she does in the comics, but will rather create some sort of energy extensions of her fists and other body parts.)

Check out the new clip below:

We also got a glimpse of Kamala holding her domino mask which she will don as part of her regular costume.  But in this clip, she is mostly shown sporting a homemade knock-off of Carol’s uniform.  It’s hard to determine whether this is uglier or better than Peter Parker’s original suit from Captain America: Civil War.

As the teaser reveals, Ms. Marvel will arrive next summer, which places it a little closer to the release of The Marvels on February 17, 2023.  Ms. Marvel will consist of six episodes.

Bisha K. Ali developed Ms. Marvel for Disney+.  Joining Vellani are in the cast are Aramis Knight as Kareem/Red Dagger, Saagar Shaikh as Kamala’s older brother Karim, Rish Shah as Kamran, Matt Lintz as Kamala’s best friend Bruno Carrelli, Zenobia Shroff as her mother Muneeba, and Mohan Kapur as her father Yusuf.  Laurel Marsden will portray mean girl Zoe Zimmer, but it doesn’t appear that she will have a regular role.

Are you excited to see Kamala Khan in the MCU?
