The Disney Investor Day presentation offered an unbelievable bounty of new announcements and updates on all things Disney including Star Wars and Marvel.  Among the big reveals was Captain Marvel 2.

Now that isn’t Earth-shattering news.  We all knew this was coming from the moment that the first Captain Marvel was announced.  But one part of this update is that the sequel will feature Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani.  Parris portrays Monica Rambeau, the first woman in the comics to go by the name “Captain Marvel.”  Vellani won the coveted role of Kamala Khan, the title character in the upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.  Brie Larson will return to star in Captain Marvel 2, which is due to be released in 2022.  Nia DaCosta (Candyman) will direct.

The character Monica Rambeau appeared in the first Captain Marvel, but she was a little girl in that 1996-set film.  Monica was the child of Carol Danvers’ best friend, Maria.  Akira Akbar played young Monica, while Lashana Lynch portrayed Maria.  Parris will debut as adult Monica in WandaVision which premieres on Disney+ on January 15, 2021.  (See photo above)

In the comics, Monica Rambeau was the first female to use the name “Captain Marvel” after the death of the Kree champion Mar-Vell.  (A feminized version of Mar-Vell appeared in Captain Marvel, played by Annette Bening.)  After joining the Avengers and even leading the team for a while, Monica’s history became a muddled mess, but in nutshell, she has since changed her name to Photon, Pulsar, went by her own real name, and most recently Spectrum.  Even with her lengthy run in the comics, it has only been in recent years that Monica has emerged as one of the leading heroes of the Marvel Universe.

Kamala Khan is a teenage hero, granted stretching and shape-shifting powers by the Inhuman’s Terrigen Mist.  She is a Muslim Pakistani-American and is based out of New Jersey.  She based her heroic identity on that of her idol Carol Danvers, by adopting the codename that Danvers started out using, but discarded when she decided to become Captain Marvel.

It was announced in September that newcomer Vellani had won the role of Kamala, who would be the focus of her own Disney+ series.  It is not yet known when Ms. Marvel will be released, but it will be written by Bisha K. Ali (Four Weddings and a Funeral), and Adil El Arbi, and Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Menon are attached as directors.  Matt Lintz (Henry on The Walking Dead) is attached to play one of Kamala’s best friends and confidantes, Bruno Carrelli.

Check back for updates on Captain Marvel 2 and Ms. Marvel as they arrive!
