From Superhero To Villain: Gal Gadot Cast As The Evil Queen In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’

Gal Gadot might be best known for playing perhaps the most famous female superhero in history, Wonder Woman, but she is now slated to portray one of the most infamous villains in film history– Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs‘ Evil Queen, in Disney’s latest live-action remake of one of its many classic animated flicks.

Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2) is directing. Rachel Zegler who stars in Steven Spielberg’s upcoming West Side Story and in Shazam! Fury of the Gods plays the title role.  Oscar and Tony winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La LandThe Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen) are on hand to write new songs for the adaptation.

The 1937 animated original was the very first feature-length animated film from Disney and earned Walt Disney a special Academy Award for technical innovation. In addition to a regular Oscar, Disney was given seven small statuettes in honor of the Seven Dwarfs that featured in the film. Of course, the film was adapted from the fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm.

The Evil Queen (who has never had a name, that I know of) is known for gazing into her enchanted looking glass and chanting “Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” (Often mistakenly quoted as “Mirror, mirror on the wall…”) While the Slave in the Mirror (you can bet he won’t be called that in the new film) usually replies that she is, when her stepdaughter Snow White reaches maturity, the Mirror informs the Queen that Snow White is now the fairest, sending the Queen into a jealous fit, and she plans to have Snow White killed.

Also, about halfway through the film, the Queen disguises herself– changing from her usual elegant form to that of a wrinkled old crone. It should be interesting to see Gadot undergo a similar change in the new movie!

The live-action version is expected to begin filming next year. This is the latest in Disney’s string of live-action remakes of its animated classics and is the one that reaches the furthest back into the company’s vault.

Gal Gadot just attended the premiere for her latest movie, Red Notice, which costars Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. That action-comedy will hit Netflix on November 11.  Her other new movie, Death on the Nile, appears to have been indefinitely shelved as it costars Armie Hammer who found himself accused of many counts of rape and other sexual assault, including forced BDSM, mutilation, and cannibal fetishism.

Check back for updates on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as they arrive.
