Rachel Zegler, who stars as Maria in the Steven Spielberg-helmed remake of West Side Story, has joined the cast of Shazam!: Fury of the Gods in an undisclosed “key role.” West Side Story is Zegler’s first movie, and it appears that Shazam!: Fury of the Gods will only be her second.
Her casting was first reported by The Wrap who also pointed out that Zegler’s casting follows that of Sasha Calle, who will portray Supergirl in The Flash. Both actors are of Colombian descent.
The first Shazam! made $366 million at the global box office and received glowing reviews, sitting at an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. David F. Sandberg is returning to direct the sequel. Henry Gayden, who wrote the screenplay for the first, is also penning the second, and star Zachary Levi is also returning to star. It is also expected that the adult cast, Adam Brody (Freddy), Meagan Good (Darla), Michelle Borth (Mary), Ross Butler (Eugene), and D.J. Cotrona (Pedro) will be back.
It hasn’t been officially announced whether the child stars from the first movie will be back. That includes Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy. Due to the coronavirus, production on Fury of the Gods has been postponed multiple times and those pesky kids keep getting older and older. Will the magic of a child turning into an adult superhero still be there if the movie depicts a young adult turning into an older adult?

Jack Dylan Grazer is now 17 and stars on the not-for-kids HBO series We Are Who We Are:

The other kids in the cast included Faithe Herman as Darla, Grace Fulton as Mary, Ian Chen as Eugene, and Jovan Armand as Pedro.
Will Warner Brothers bring these “kids” back or will they be recast? We’ll have to wait and see.
