Just two days after the oft-delayed superhero sequel finally made its way to audiences, Warner Brothers has greenlit ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ the third installment of the Amazing Amazon’s adventures. Star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins will both return for the threequel.

Fans waited almost a year to see Wonder Woman 1984. Delayed by the pandemic, the film was kept out of theatres. WW84 reached screens on Christmas Day, both in limited theatres and through the HBO Max streaming service. The film outdid expectations, bringing in over $16 million this weekend. HBO Max reported over half of the users streamed the film on Christmas Day and millions more over the weekend.

Wonder Woman 1984 broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, WarnerMedia’s head of Direct-to-Consumer Business. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”

Wonder Woman 3 will return to theatres, instead of the hybrid release that most 2021 Warner Brothers films will have. “We are excited to be able to continue her story with our real-life Wonder Women — Gal and Patty — who will return to conclude the long-planned theatrical trilogy,” Toby Emmerich Warner Brothers Chief confirmed. Other than Gadot and Jenkins (who will also write the screenplay), there are no confirmed cast or story details. Jenkins, however, did tease the return of Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva/Cheetah on Twitter when asked by a fan:

At the end of Wonder Woman 1984, we never really saw what happened to Barbara. Is it possible she retained some of the powers she gained in the film? Only time (and Patty) will tell.

Wonder Woman 1984 has had mixed reviews, with some praising the positive message, and performances. Others felt the film failed to deliver on its potential, underusing the decision to set the film in 1984.

What did you think?
