‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Trailer Introduces The Cast, Teases A New Starship

The 2020 premiere of Star Trek: Lower Decks saw the storied franchise boldly go somewhere it hadn’t gone since the 1970s: animation. And if there’s one thing that the Star Trek Universe panel at this year’s Comic-Con@Home made plain as day, it’s that animated Star Trek is here to stay. In fact, while there was some brief acknowledgment of the live-action productions, the event was almost entirely focused on animated Trek.

Not only did we get some teases for the second season of Lower Decks, we finally got our first real look at the Star Trek: Prodigy, including a full-length trailer. On top of properly introducing the cast (who we got our first look at this spring), the trailer also gives us a fleeting first glimpse of the show’s starship. Eagle-eyed viewers will note that the ship is called the Protostar and that her registry number starts with an NX, marking her an advanced prototype of some sort. Most exciting for long-time fans, it also teased (through a single line of narration) the return of Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. Appearing here as a holographic representation of the beloved captain, Prodigy marks Mulgrew’s first Star Trek appearance since her cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis nearly twenty years ago.

You can check out the first trailer for Star Trek: Prodigy here:

Contentiously described as a “kid’s show,” Prodigy is a computer-animated series that will follow a “crew” of young alien outcasts who come into possession of an abandoned Starfleet ship. In terms of the timeline, the show picks up in the Delta Quadrant in the year 2383, placing it a few years after the events of Nemesis and Lower Decks but well before those of Star Trek: Picard.

Though originally slated to air on Nickelodeon, Star Trek: Prodigy will be available to stream on Paramount Plus when it debuts in the fall of 2021. Be sure to check back with GeekAnything for more on Star Trek: Prodigy as its premiere approaches.
