Please state the nature of the emergency! Star Trek: Prodigy, the new animated series coming to Paramount+ made news today, giving fans their first look at Captain Kathryn Janeway. Kate Mulgrew played the Starfleet Officer for seven seasons on Star Trek: Voyager. She returns to voice the character again for the new series.

The CG-animated Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences was created by Emmy Award-winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters, Ninjago). It follows a group of young aliens who have taken over a derelict starship in the Delta Quadrant. They must learn to work together to survive and maybe just find themselves a better future. Luckily for them, the ship has an emergency training hologram program. Lucky for us, it just happens to be based on Captain Janeway. It is through her that they will learn about Starfleet and what it represents over the course of their adventures.

News that Mulgrew planned to return to active duty in Starfleet came out last fall. During a virtual panel for NYCC, she said:

“I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”

The new series, set in the Delta Quadrant, takes place in the year 2383. That is five years after the finale of Voyager. There, Janeway defeated the Borg and got her crew home after seven long years lost in the Quadrant, with some help from her future self.
