At long last, Black Widow is finally being released! It’s the first solo outing for stalwart Scarlett Johansson and has been delayed three times since it was first expected to arrive last May. Johansson reprises her role as superhero/superspy Natasha Romanoff and the film looks to offer more details about her origin as she heads back to Mother Russia, where she was raised in the Red Room to become a lethal assassin, before turning over a new leaf and becoming one of the saviors of the planet.
To hype the July 9 release of the film– which is the first part of Marvel Phase 4– Disney and Marvel Studios have released six character posters. In addition to a Scarlett poster, there are images dedicated to Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova; Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff, a character who, in the comics, is also known as the *villain* Iron Maiden; David Harbour as the Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, who, in the comics, was once married to Natasha and who is essentially Russia’s answer to Captain America; “?” as the film’s villain The Taskmaster; and O-T Fagbenle as Rick Mason, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who also has a past romantic connection to Natasha, and has the most gene.
Check them all out below:
There are two fan theories as to the identity of The Taskmaster. Some believe it is Weisz’s character, Melina Vostokoff, under that chrome skull mask. Others believe it is Fagbenle’s Rick Mason. It could be either, or it could be someone else entirely. In the comics, he’s just some guy named Tony Masters and he has no connection to Black Widow. (I don’t even recall a time Black Widow ever encountered Taskmaster, but if I missed something, let me know in the comments.)
Black Widow also includes William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Ray Winstone as Dreykov (the head of the Red Room), and reportedly, Robert Downey, Jr. as Tony Stark.
The film will be released in theaters and as a PVOD on Disney+ on July 9. Do these posters have you more pumped for this film?
